Welcome to Dark Star Dog Training, where we specialise in training and behavioural care for dogs.
Hi, my name is Jason, and I am a qualified advanced canine behaviourist and dog trainer, who has been training dogs for almost 10 years.
Whether you are thinking of buying a dog, need some guidance on training, or have a more complex behavioural problem, we can help.
As well as my dog training qualifications I also have a Masters Degree in human psychology which helps me understand people too.
Using these skills, we offer services based on the needs of both the owner and their dog, whether you want a family pet or a working dog. We, cover the Shrewsbury and surrounding Shropshire area.

Handler and Dog 1 : 1 training
£45 per hour Handler and dog 1:1 training Understanding your dog and their behaviour Gain essential skills for effectively handling and training your dog with our expert-led Handler Training sessions. Do you need help with lead pulling, jumping up, poor recall, good manners, retrieving, or being able to get your dog to settle down? Let us help you get the best from your dog.
One handler and two dogs 1 : 1 training
£70 per 90 minute session. One handler and two dogs 1:1 training. Dogs can be trained separety or together during the time. Professional training to support owning more than one dog. Whether you are introducing a new dog to the family or have two dogs that would benefit from training together, let us show you how to get the best from two dogs.
Puppy training - Dogs under 6 mths old
£30 per 40 minute session Puppy Training - dogs under 6 months old. Training young dogs who are still developing physically and intellectually. We focus on play, socialisation and developing a happy and confident dog. We look at helping your new puppy to thrive in their new home, with an introduction to keeping them safe, well mannered, and able to achieve skills such as sit, wait, leave and recall.
Introduction to shooting with a dog
£80 per session. Understanding a typical field shoot for both the dog, and you the handler. Is your dog suited to working in the field? Does your dog have the necessary skill to work safely and effectively on a typical field shoot? Where do the guns go? How do the beaters work? What do the picking up team do? We can talk through where your dog fits into the day and what skills you will need to be able to demonstrate so you can take your dog with confidence. Following an initial assessment, we may progress to take your dog out to a working environment where you can walk over the ground, experience a beating line, and if appropriate expose your dog to the sound of gunfire in a very controlled way.
Behavioural assessment
£180 per hour session. Behavioural Assessment Initial assessment with written report. Follow up sessions £65 per hour. Written behaviour modification plan following our assessment. Do you have a dog that is reactive to other dogs or people? Do you have a dog that gets anxious when you leave them? Do you have a dog that has become aggressive? Do you have a dog that is frightened of traffic? Do you have a dog that is destructive? As a qualified behaviourist and trainer I can help you to understand why your dog is behaving this way, and understand is this a training problem or is it a behavioural problem. Behavioural problems can be very complex, so I work with you to understand the root cause of these issues, putting in a science based plan to overcome them.
Purchasing a dog. General advice
£30 per 40 minute session. General dog buying advice and guidance Are you thinking of getting a dog? Not sure about which breed would best suit you? What are the needs of that breed? Exercise levels? Family pet, pet gundog or working dog? Want advice about breeding lines? Kennel Club Registration? Inbreeding coefficients? Health tests? We have a lot of experience in helping people getting the right dog for them.

Led by Jason, a former police hostage and crisis negotiator, a qualified advanced canine behaviourist and trainer, with a Masters Degree in human psychology, our family team brings extensive experience working with various dog breeds.
We are committed to providing personalised training programs tailored to your dog's specific needs and behaviours, ensuring a happy and well-trained companion for life.
As owners of three cocker spaniels, pet gundogs that work during the shooting season, we understand the complexities that dog ownership can bring. Whether you have a new puppy, need help with training or have a behavioural problem, we can help.
Where appropriate our dogs, Dodger, Pip and Fizz act as demonstrators or as distractions to help us to help you get the best out of your dog.
